Why did PM appoint ex-RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das as Principal Secretary?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known for maintaining close associations with officials he favours, often ensuring they remain connected to his administration in some capacity. Shaktikanta Das is among those officials. Having served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for six years, he retired in December last year.

Centre has appointed Shaktikanta Das as Principal Secretary to PM Modi. His appointment will continue for the duration of the prime minister’s tenure or until further orders.

Das retired in December after serving as RBI governor for six years. He has held key roles in economic policy, including his tenure as Secretary of Economic Affairs in 2017, where he oversaw major financial reforms. He played a role in the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, which replaced multiple indirect taxes, and was involved in the government’s response to the demonetisation policy.

As RBI governor, Das focused on financial stability and economic growth. He introduced measures to address liquidity concerns in the non-banking financial sector and worked on strengthening the regulatory framework for banks and financial institutions.

Das has represented India at international forums, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the G-20, and BRICS. He was involved in negotiations for the USD 22 billion IMF bailout package in 1991 and served as India’s Sherpa at G20 meetings in Hamburg and Buenos Aires.
